Position Details

CalWave’s mission is to provide a solution to secure clean, affordable, and reliable electricity and freshwater for coastal communities. Our team members are active learners who enjoy working on tough technology problems in massive markets and embody our values of humanity, excellence, and creativity. The company is backed by several development contracts with the U.S. Department of Energy and committed investors.

CalWave is seeking a dynamic and innovative Lead Drivetrain Engineer to further advance CalWave’s proprietary and high-performance wave energy converter technology to multi-unit commercial-scale deployments. The selected individual will work closely with CalWave engineers and CalWave’s world-class industry and R&D partners (including UC Berkeley, Sandia National Labs, NREL, and others) to support the drivetrain architectural design of CalWave’s Wave Energy Converter and support design evolution and refinement of overall system architecture and associated systems.

The preferred candidate should have experience designing rotary drivetrains for large heavy-duty applications (100 kW+), experience with design of coupled gearing, electric machines, and/or hydraulic machines involving sizing, specification, procurement, and operation of rotary drivetrains.

The preferred candidate should possess strong analytical and technical skills, with demonstrable ability to understand complex systems, identify both opportunities and hurdles to drivetrain development from a technical and cost perspective, and develop conceptual and detailed modeling tools to capture potential impacts and benefits at the system level.  The ideal candidate will also have experience in cross-functional coordination with technical disciplines involved in hardware prototyping activities, Hardware-In-The-Loop testing, power system managing and storage (batteries, capacitors), and correlating control design.

This role will also include defining and executing system-level design trade studies to inform the cost and performance-optimizing system designs. Subsequently, this role will focus on developing and de-risking mechanical design concepts and assembly approaches to realize a scalable, modular product architecture that is readily field assembled.

  • Design and engineering of rotating mechanical drivetrains and adjunct electro-mechanical systems with a focus on power performance, fabrication, and cost optimization.
  • Component selection and/or design for gearing solutions, electric machines (top-level), shaft design, bearings.
  • Support systems engineering efforts with a focus on mechanical and electric drivetrain systems.
  • Life cycle analysis of mechanical components and structures for marine applications.
  • Outreach to and negotiations with product and component suppliers.
  • Support team in all aspects of concept development, analysis, design, and specification.

  • Minimum qualifications MS (or BS with relevant experience) in mechanical engineering
  • 3-5+ years of experience in heavy-duty industry
  • Experience with high torque mechanical drive trains
  • Proficient with modeling tools suitable for drivetrain design such as Matlab Simulink or similar.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Passionate team worker with self-starter and entrepreneurial spirit

Company Background:

CalWave’s vision is to reverse climate change and preserve global biodiversity through the renewable and sustainable power of ocean waves. Our mission is to bring superior wave technology to the market worldwide empowering coastal communities to transition to a fully sustainable and reliable power supply. Our proprietary wave energy converter technology achieves high performance while surviving storms and extreme conditions by operating fully submerged at all times.

CalWave’s Major Milestones:

Wave power has the technically achievable potential to power 20-30% of US and EUs electricity needs. According to the US DOE, the US Wave Energy Technical Resource Total is 898-1229 TWh/year (22-30% of demand).

Environmental impact and sustainability are a critical concern of CalWave. The 2018 State of Knowledge For Environmental Effects and the 2016 State of the Science report summarizes and places in context information about the environmental effects of marine energy systems, to the extent that the information is currently available.
