Dear CalWave supporters,

We hope you and those close to you are well. Our team is especially grateful for all the hard work and risk our health care and essential workers continue to endure. Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement. Our climate continues to worsen at an accelerated rate (atmospheric CO2 levels are 30% higher today than 50 years ago at 416.76 ppm. We need to avoid 450 parts per million (ppm) to give us a chance at keeping global warming below 2°C.)

President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon plant a tree on the White House South Lawn to recognize the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.

  1. CalWave’s Open Ocean Pilot in San Diego

After the global disruption of supply chains and working conditions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our team here at CalWave is now back on track for our first open ocean pilot, the culmination of 4 years of work supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. We want to thank all our partners that have been working closely with us on this project to reach this critical step of field testing our technology. With the necessary permits secured, last fall CalWave fabricated and deployed the anchors near the Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) in San Diego. More recently, we completed drivetrain testing on campus at UC Berkeley and fabrication & assembly of the pilot wave energy device is progressing in earnest.

Additionally, CalWave has partnered with the PNNL Triton initiative to add environmental monitoring instrumentation to our pilot. The goal of our pilot is to validate the performance and reliability of our solution in the field. This is a major milestone that will unlock the launch of our first product line.
2. CalWave in the media and other exciting news Activate.org – Sea Change – Activate Fellows and the Blue Economy

  • As an alumni of the first cohort of Activate.org, CalWave had the honor of being featured in a recent article focusing on the Blue Economy.

The IMPACT – How CalWave Is Reducing The Cost Of Wave Power Harvesting

  • After last week’s discussion of what wave power is and why it is important to the renewable energy ecosystem and the green transition, I got the opportunity to chat with Marcus Lehmann, CEO and Co-Founder of CalWave, about he and his team plan seek to change the tides of the Blue Economy.

NHA Marine Energy Council “Commercialization Strategy for Marine Energy

  • The strategy lays out two key messages:
  1. The call by NHA’s Marine Energy Council to meet deployment targets of: 50 MW by 2025, 500 MW by 2030, and at least 1 GW by 2035. While these targets are relatively modest, meeting them would spark liftoff for the domestic marine energy sector.
  2. Outlines 10 specific actions for federal policymakers to help meet these deployment targets. These actions include, for example, significant new funding for infrastructure related distributed generation opportunities for marine energy or new resources for DOE’s “Powering the Blue Economy” initiative.
